Marie loves meat. And sex. And revenge. She hates vegetables, and her father. She needs cash for the hit man, a biker who fears only the water.
Casey wants a bong hit. And to move out of his mom’s condo. And to keep his head attached, which becomes less likely after Marie sets him up for murdering her lover.
The Gas Hat takes a gleefully twisted look at fringe-dwellers in blissful Marin County Wise barflies and dumb criminals. A profane mother and evil cats. A pragmatic poet and a self-proclaimed artist of oral sex. The result is a stoner-noir tale of seduction, delusion — and the comic joys of self-medication.
"Redolent of the Big Lebowski and Pynchon's high California weirdness," says Washington State Magazine.
"Dark, witty, quietly surreal," says the Examiner.
"Wonderful mix of literary crime fiction and dark comedy that will keep you on the edge of your seat ... unless you laugh so hard you fall off of it," says River City author Frank Zafiro.

Gas Hat is a wonderful mix of literary crime fiction and dark comedy that will keep you on the edge of your seat...unless you laugh so hard you fall off of it.

This novel will fulfill the needs of many different readers. You want a literary novel? Check. Miller's flowing narrative and beautiful descriptions are captivating, and seamless in the story. They sneak up on you instead of bashing you over the brow with a pretentious "See what I'm doing with my MFA, Mom!"

You don't dig literary? Fine. How about crime fiction, then? Miller weaves a tale of murder for hire that will keep you worrying and guessing until the very end...an ending is a realistic and satisfying one.

Crime not your bag? You'd rather read some dark comedy? Well, the Brothers Coen and Christopher Moore are going to have to push over on the pew of black comedy to allow a few gas hat worshipers room to give Miller praise. He creates perfectly plausible yet ridiculous scenarios that are awash in dark humor, and the realistic but insane characters to go along with them. If "I gotta stab her three times?" in Pulp Fiction made you laugh, be careful if you drink anything while reading Gas Hat. You may spray your kindle with coffee.

But what truly won me over in The Gas Hat was Miller's ability to write characters and dialogue. His characters are finely drawn, creating a vivid picture of exactly who they are. I'm a visual reader who sees the story in my head like a movie as I read, and in my mind's eye, Miller's characters drip with detail. Detail, by the way, that he provides rather than detail I had to imagine and fill in myself. For example, he captures the mindset of the lazy, underachieving pot smoking protagonist so completely that I thought he was writing about a guy I went to high school with. Which he was. He's writing about that guy we all went to high school with. And he does in it a way that makes the poor loser sympathetic. I know I was rooting for him. Hell, near the end of the book, I maybe even wanted to smoke a bowl with him.

To go along with his characterization, Miller's dialogue is bang on. Many writers have one dialogue voice no matter who is talking but Miller is able to give a unique voice to all of his characters when they speak. A page or two of nothing but dialogue, a la Elmore Leonard, is no problem in The Gas Hat. You never have to wonder who is talking because you can hear that voice as plain as the gas hat on Casey's head.

Here's my simple take on The Gas Hat. Read it. You will be glad you did.

funny book with a good look at many of today's kidsCan;t wait for his next one.
"Richard Miller is an inventive writer who will take you on a real romp! It was fun to recognize familiar places mentioned in my book, Making the Most of Marin."

Patricia Arrigoni
Now that Richard Miller has a second novel under his belt, we can begin to spot welcome constants in his work. His natural domain is clearly black humor, and the characters who inhabit that domain are flawed philosophers of the mundane. Part of our delight as readers lies in seeing them succeed or fail in spite of themselves. With its pop culture riffs and knowing twist on a familiar genre, The Gas Hat is a natural successor to All You Can Eat and is right at home among contemporary American fiction.
