Michael Flynn opened his saga of near-future technology and space exploration with Firestar, in which he introduced a set of characters orbiting around one powerful and determined woman Mariesa van Huyten, who is obsessed with the need to get humanity back into space and to save Earth from disaster. In Rogue Star, van Huyten's struggles continue.

Three astronauts are headed out beyond Mars on the first human trip to the asteroid belt. In orbit around Earth, a construction crew is building the first permanent space station, owned by van Huyten's consortium. Meanwhile, the president of the United States is trying to force her into making a secret deal to put weapons in orbit so he can intervene in the ongoing wars.

Van Huyten's plan is in place - and some people will kill to stop it.

Michael Flynn lives in Easton, Pennsylvania. He is the winner of the Robert A. Heinlein Award and was a Hugo nominee for Eifelheim.

Rogue Star (Audible Audio Edition) Michael Flynn Malcolm Hillgartner Inc Blackstone Audio Books

As many writers that have been compared to Robert Heinlein only to fall short of The Master's works, Michael Flynn is the ONLY one to actually have the credentials to claim this exalted place in Sci-Fi, having received the FIRST Heinlein Award for writings in hard Sci-Fi, voted this new honor by a panel of judges including some of the greatest authorial names in modern Sci-Fi Literature!(See at [...])
I recall having seen Rogue Star(along with the other tomes in the quadrilogy) on the bookstore shelves for years, and am at a loss that I waited until learning of Flynn' Award to finally try his work. As Heinlein did, and all too few have done since, Michael Flynn has written about the near future as if he had his own Time Machine and is returning with reports of what he has seen himself!
To quote Poul Anderson, legendary giant of Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre, "Firestar was a mighty hard act to follow, but Michael Flynn has done so, and brilliantly! Rogue Star continues the story, with the same imaginative realism, suspenseful narration, and vivid humanness, plus all sorts of new ideas and insights."
If you are contemplating reading this excellent quadrilogy, buy them ALL, so you don't have to wait for delivery between volumes, and be prepared to set aside any other tomes until you finish the series!

Rogue Star (Audible Audio Edition) Michael Flynn Malcolm Hillgartner Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

This is Michael Flynn's second book in the Firestar series. It follows Firestar and is followed in turn by Lodestar and Falling Stars. It advances with the plot, characters, and slow pace of the preceding book. There are a number of well-developed characters, but much of the narrative flows around three who do not meet face-to-face in this book.

Mariesa van Huyten has continued to expand her financial empire, furthering its interests in space industries. She simultaneously builds the technology and organizational infrastructure that will be needed for an asteroid defense system. Mariesa continues to deal with business competitors and faces mounting challenges from the Federal government, environmentalist groups, and her own family. There are some unanticipated changes in her personal relationships.

Forest Calhoun leads a three-man space mission to explore a near-Earth asteroid. There are interesting dynamics between members of the team on this very long mission. They discover what some think is evidence of a prior visit to this asteroid. There is considerable disagreement about this issue. And the crew is not able to share all the information they obtain on the asteroid.

Flaco Mercado is a young construction worker hired to expand an Earth-orbit space station. He faces the challenges of zero-gravity living, separation from his pregnant wife Serafina, and the rough comradeship of his fellow spaceriggers. Flaco has a front seat for the results of the political intrigues Marisea navigates through on the ground.

This book is a better read than the one before it. There is more space-oriented science fiction content in orbit and on the asteroid mission. The lengthy introspections and character development of the first book pay off with a better understanding of the complex and conflicting motives behind some of the characters' actions. The role of business and political plans and events is continually emphasized. This creates a more realistic account than found in most action-oriented science fiction.

I recommend the book to those who like near-future fiction with more depth than action. Please to read the four books in this series in the order written and plan on reading all of them. There are spoilers for those who skip ahead and they really can spoil your enjoyment. You have been warned! )
Rogue Star by Michael Flynn is the very good second book that continues the story started in Firestar. Whereas Firestar began the story of private space flights Rogue Star focuses on a long space flight to explore an asteroid.

I enjoy these books because the stories and characters are so lifelike. For example, a group of three astronauts are on a trip to a passing asteroid and you learn a lot about their personalities and fears along with some secrets that I won't reveal about the asteroid itself. You also find out more about Mariesa van Huyten, the CEO of the conglomerate that kick started a new golden age of space exploration. In this second book she is challenged by the President of the United States himself who wants to start up the "Star Wars"" program of the 1980s again. Her decision will affect her position in her company while her fear of pending asteroid strikes make others question her sanity. You also read about some of the men working on the orbiting space station which gives you a picture of the impact of the new technologies on the "common" man.

I liked Rogue Star as a good continuation of the first book Firestar. The space program has evolved to become a mature industry. The book is a solid, enjoyable read of the near future which will definitely include space exploration. It isn't a fast-paced, thrilling book though so I give it four out of five stars.
